MIMB FAQ on Microsoft Visio

Supported features and versions

MIMB provide bridges that allow you to exchange software (object) and database models between Microsoft Visio and many other applications MIMB supports.

UML Software Model Format: OMG XMI 1.0 / UML 1.1 N/A
(Visio does not support
UML model import)
MIMB Bridge: "Microsoft Visio UML (XMI)" import bridge
Visio Versions: Visio 2002 Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect

Visio 2002 does not allow you to access its metadata directly and provides export and import options to exchange the metadata through popular formats. Visio supports ERwin ERX metadata format for database models and OMG XMI/UML format for object models. The following tables outline Visio products and metadata exchange options they support.

* - The XMI Export is not a standard product feature. Visio provides it as an unsupported Download that allows you to build, install and use Visio Add-on that exports UML static model (e.g. class diagram) to XMI. You can find a short article describing how to build and use the solution from:

** - While the XMI export documentation claims support for Visio Professional 2002, MITI was able to confirm support for Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect only. Attempts to use the Add-on for other versions of Visio were not successful.

Importing Database Model from Visio

You can import a Visio database model to MIMB using the “Microsoft Visio Database (ERX)“ import bridge. The bridge takes ERwin ERX file as input. You should use Visio to export a database model to ERwin ERX file version 3.5.

Please consult Visio product documentation on how to Export ERwin ERX file or try to access the feature from the “Database-> Import/Export -> Export to ERwin ERX file” menu.

Exporting Database Model to Visio

You can export a database model to Visio through ERwin ERX file using the “Microsoft Visio Database (ERX)” export bridge. The bridge exports an ERwin ERX file. You should use Visio to import the file.

Please consult Visio product documentation on how to Import ERwin ERX file or try to access the feature from the “Database-> Import/Export -> Import from ERwin ERX file” menu.

Importing Object Model from Visio

You can import a Visio object model to MIMB using the “Microsoft Visio UML (XMI)” import bridge. The bridge takes an XMI/XML file as input. You should use Visio to export the object model to XMI/XML file.

Please consult Microsoft Visio documentation on how to Export UML model to XMI format at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnvisio02/html/umlxmi.asp.

The documentation describes how to build, install and use Visio Add-on that allows you to export UML static model information in OMG XMI 1.0 / UML 1.1 format.
